Caitlin Lindquist: A Little Dash of Darling

For many people, fashion is the law. And in a world where the rules are constantly changing, who better to have as a fashion guide than a lawyer who can rock multiple looks? Caitlin Lindquist traded in the mountains of Utah for the sandy beaches of San Diego and along with the move came a style transformation from preppy to boho chic. To escape the dusty law library, Caitlin created her colourful blog to highlight everything from clothes, to cleanses, to fabulous giveaways. This fashion aficionado is passionate about finding and sharing the dash of darling she discovers in the world around her. Meet Caitlin!

What inspired you to start your blog A Little Dash of Darling?
I started A Little Dash of Darling in my third year of law school as a creative outlet to give myself the opportunity to do something I enjoyed outside of class and leaning over a book.

What do you love about living in California? How has it influenced your style?
I think I love absolutely everything about California (except perhaps the lack of parking spots).  When I first moved to San Diego I was really sad to be leaving the beautiful Park City, Utah Mountains… but San Diego quickly grew on me and the sand beneath my toes or an ocean-view hike can always cure any homesickness.

California has definitely played a role in my personal style.  While my Utah upbringing has nurtured my preppy J.Crew-loving side, California has given me my more relaxed, beach and boho-inspired looks.  It’s fun to play around with the different styles and experiment with them all depending on my mood.

What is the easiest way to add a feminine touch to an outfit?
Right now I am really into adding feminine flair through accessories.  A little pink lipstick and some fun-colored nails here, and perhaps a statement necklace or dainty accessories there.  It’s fun to mix it up but I think the little details go a long way even in the most edgy or masculine outfits.

As a lawyer you have experience with laws. Name one style rule you would never break.
When it comes to style, I don’t really believe in rules.  In a world where you can be anyone, why hold yourself back from expressing that?  If you feel like being bold, I say go for it… confidently.

Who are your style icons?
There are so many fashionable women out there, past and present, but I would have to say I have always loved Kate Moss’ effortless edge and admired the Olsen twins fearless choices.  Today I am also really loving Olivia Palmero’s femininity mixed with both Diane Kruger’s and Marion Cotillard’s timeless elegance.  Each one of these women have individual style that they have made all their own and to me are iconic.

Your fashion photographs on your blog are stunning. Do you have an interest in photography as well as fashion?
Thank you so much for the kind words.  That means a lot because quite frankly… I have no idea what I am doing 99% of the time.  My husband and I just bought our camera this past Christmas and we are still trying to learn how to use it… but we have certainly enjoyed playing around with our camera and I would love to develop more photography skills… for personal and professional uses.

Congratulations on your wedding last year. As an experienced fashionable bride, what are your current favourite bridal trends?
Again, thank you very much.  Our wedding was such an incredible experience and I get starry-eyed just thinking about it.  Meticulously planning every detail of our wedding was no small feat… but I enjoyed every step of the way, as I really wanted our personalities to come out in the details.  For brides I am still loving the mermaid silhouettes.  To me they speak glamorous sophistication and gracefulness.  For the décor I love how people are getting creative with DIY details and letting their personalities shine through in their choices, but I also love it mixed with classic beauty and elegance for a timeless affair.

What is your favourite outfit that you’ve posted to date?
I don’t know that I have a particular favorite.  It’s been fun to look back and watch my blogging / photography skills mature.  But I did enjoy the Retailmenot post because it was a fun challenge for me running to the mall under time constraints and picking out the most fashionably-affordable outfit I could find.  Typically I just “shop my closet” when picking out outfits so it was a fun change of pace.

What advice would you give aspiring fashionistas?
Always be yourself.  Your personal style will change as you grow and learn who you are and who you want to be, but don’t be afraid to experiment with different looks.  This will help you discover what works for you and what doesn’t.  And no matter what, be confident in your choices.  If you feel uncomfortable in what you are wearing, it will show.

Where do you see the future of A Little Dash of Darling?
I’d love to continue experimenting with A Little Dash of Darling.  For now I love posting my daily personal style, beauty must-haves, fitness routines and healthy favorites, and everyday adventures.  But someday I’d love to explore designing my own line or perhaps developing my site into a bigger one.  I am always open to opportunities because you never know what the future may hold.
